L.252

A large, beautiful porcelain lamp made by Moore Brothers (Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, 1872-1905). See also L.205. Based on the signature, the lamp can be dated between 1891-1902. Moore Brothers offered lamps without cherubs, only with plant ornaments and lamps with 1 to 4 cherubs. This lamp is one of the large 4-putti lamps from Moore Brothers. The 4 putti and the "tree trunk" as a column are the same for all lamps; only the base and the vegetable ornaments vary. Very similar lamps with the same arrangement of 4 putti exist with the Christmas cactus applications that are often found. This lamp here has orchids as an addition to the putti.

The lamp is in surprisingly good condition; almost all of the flowers are completely undamaged and the porcelain glaze is almost perfect. Only one cherub foot was broken. That was probably the reason why I was able to bid for the lamp at all. My porcelain repairer Mr. Kühnel has masterfully shaped the missing foot and painted it to match.

I completed the lamp with a marked Duplex chimney and a finely etched, British ball shade.
