L.209
A wonderful Art Nouveau lamp in a very unusual shape and with a beautiful shade! A rare, even complete find on eBay except for the chimney. The shade and the special shade holder are by C.A.Kleemann (pictured in the 1903/04 catalogue). These glass shades with their special brass holders are very rare. Later they were often replaced with silk shades.
I had to invest a lot of work to clean the lamp so perfectly. All metal parts were heavily tarnished, especially the copper lid of the font was downright black. Normal rubbing with steel wool was not successful, because the metal surfaces were also protected by a varnish. I then used steel wool soaked in acetone and the cleaning went quite well. Nevertheless, I had to bathe the brass mounts of the shades in acid for a short time to get them completely shiny. Completely cleaned and polished, the lamp shines as if it had been made only yesterday. The result is uniquely beautiful...
The burner is a 15’’’ Rex burner by Ehrich & Graetz, made for Ludwig Wesp. Unfortunately the guide pins of the lifter were missing. I adapted original E&G lifter pins in length and soldered them.
The shoulder chimney has some surface damage inside, but otherwise it is in perfect order and exactly the right chimney for this burner.
The shade holder bears the D.R.G.M. number 145345, and this dates it very accurately to 1900-1901.
