L.193
A large, American Gone with the wind lamp by the Fostoria Glass Co. from ca. 1900-1910. A very similarly shaped lamp is shown in the Fostoria catalogue from 1904 (model "Vermont").
Unfortunately, the original ball shade with the same painting is missing. But at least the lamp was not electrified and the original burner with the flame disc was still on it. It is otherwise quite difficult to get a good GWTW lamp that is not yet electrified and therefore with a complete burner. A Vesta shade in honey colour from the USA has replaced the ball shade here.
The vase is a mighty glass vase that widens conically towards the top and is painted with flowers. The vase was dirty and the colours were dull, so I spent hours working with polishing cream to free the vase from the dull coating (dirt? varnish? kerosene/paraffin grime?). Fortunately, the colours had been fired, otherwise they would not survive this procedure.
The other metal parts (cast iron and sheet brass) were painted over with bronze paint and had completely darkened. I removed the paint in a sodium hydroxide bath. To my great surprise, the original galvanic bronzing came to light, and it was almost completely undamaged! The galvanic coating was so good, especially at the base, that I was able to polish excellently with the Dremel medium grit sanding attachment!
The burner also proved to be a stroke of luck. At first everything was blackishly filthy and gummed up. Treatment with acetone, soda and acid brought back the old shine! Polished with steel wool, everything looks like new. The burner is made by Plume & Atwood for Fostoria, because the patent data given on the flame disc are completely identical to the data on Royal burner of P&A (see L.139 with the Royal burner from P&A).
