L.268
A very probably French lamp with bird depictions in relief on the vase. The design is reminiscent of Far Eastern bronze vases. Compare lamp L.263. Here, too, I am very unsure whether the vase is made of cast brass, bronze or zinc, because the decorative lines are engraved afterwards. The construction of the lamp is typically French; I could have listed this lamp among the French lamps, which I unfortunately failed to do. However, it came from Austria.
The whole lamp is patinated with a copper colour. The burner and the globe holder that came with it were also patinated in a dark colour. I treated the whole vase with cleaning cream and polished it. I had to remove all dirt from the burner, and the copper paint came off in the process. Then I let the burner and the new globe holder take on a light copper colour in an acid bath. The cast brass base was also very darkly patinated. I have removed patina from the raised areas so that the appearance is now much more sculptured.
The vase depicts two birds on flowering branches. The scene shows strong Japanese (or Chinese) influence.
Of course, the tulip shade in the same colour (from the USA!) goes very well with the copper-coloured lamp, both in terms of colour and design.
