L.308

My only hall lamp in the collection with a captivatingly beautiful painted glass shade made of blue milk glass. Hall lamps work differently from usual hanging lamps. Their height is not variable, although the impression is the same at first glance, because here there are also pull chains like in the hanging lamps. The difference is that the glass shade is moved upwards when the metal frame in the lower part of the lamp is pulled downwards with the lower knob. So the lower part of the lamp moves downwards, but the shade moves upwards, exposing the inside of the lamp (either a candle or a small font with a burner and glass chimney) for lighting or extinguishing the flame (see also Other Household Lamps).

Old hall lamps usually have a candle holder at their lower part. This lamp had no such device. I converted the function to kerosene/paraffin by installing a suitable, small glass font with burner and chimney. I soldered a brass tube to the lower shell of the lamp to ensure a stable stand for the font with the glass peg at bottom. However, I did not cement the font in place, but padded it with thick adhesive tape on the peg and inserted it loosely into the brass tube so that it could be removed easily later if necessary.

The shade is painted in great detail with 2 different motifs (butterfly and flowers) alternating on the 6 sides. The abundant gold decoration is very well preserved, as if the lamp had left the manufactory only yesterday!
