L.199

An unusual and large majolica lamp, which is quite rare in this kind. Due to the Art Nouveau painting, the lamp can be dated around 1900-1910.

The lamp has a mighty vase made of majolica. Four large picture medallions depict two natural landscapes and two floral motifs. The colouring is very restrained; the landscape motifs were painted in monochrome. The framing of the medallions and the other ornaments are in Art Nouveau style. The predominant colours are green, light pink and Prussian blue.

It is interesting that all parts of the lamp are glued together except the base. You can see the glass font inside but you cannot remove it. Another special feature was the brass base; although it is cast, it is so thin that it gives slightly way under the weight of the lamp. It is certainly not original to the lamp. I therefore replaced this thin base with a beautifully decorated cast zinc base. I have the feeling that the lamp is assembled from different lamp parts that did not originally belong together. However, the overall appearance is quite harmonious.

I had to refit the lamp with a good 20''' Matador burner, a matching Matador chimney and with a large tulip shade of green glass. The tulip shade is not old; it is a new production either from the UK or Australia, but it matches the lamp very well, at least in terms of colour.
