This lamp is the very first lamp I bought on eBay France. The unusual painting of the majolica vase in Japanese style had aroused my interest. At that time, I knew nothing about Far Eastern vases by Satsuma or Imari, which were converted into lamps in France.

The vase is hand-painted Satsuma pottery, with two large cartouches painted with lush flowers, butterflies and birds. The open space between these cartouches is painted with 6 large cranes. These motifs are found on many other Satsuma vases. The cranes in particular point to the same ceramic manufactory, which distinguishes itself from the other numerous manufacturers of Satsuma wares by its easily identifiable choice of motifs.

The lamp must have been electrified in the past, because the font and the plate in the brass base each have a soldered hole.

The lamp had a 15’’’ Matador burner. Some time later I bought an old St. Louis ball shade decorated with engraved flowers, which fitted the lamp very well. This shade was built for the earlier Moderator lamps and therefore it was so narrow at the bottom that it could only be used with a 12''' Kosmos burner. That's why I replaced the 15''' Matador burner with a 12''' Kosmos burner.
