A French lamp with an unconventional Satsuma vase, probably made around 1885-1895. This somewhat early dating is due to the fact that the base of the vase had to be subsequently drilled in order to pass through the threaded rod. It was therefore initially a normal flower vase.

The painting of the 5 samurai warriors is quite fine and rich in detail, which also points to an earlier origin of the vase. Later, Satsuma vases (already made with a hole at the bottom for the threaded rod) were mass produced for the French lamp market, unfortunately with coarse painting. The vase from this lamp is also somewhat unusual because only the neck area has been decorated with the typical brocade style; the figures of the samurai warriors are all painted on a dark yellow background.

The lamp came to me with the valuable St. Louis ball shade with the dragon motif. I had to replace the defective burner, however.

Base of ornamental cast brass, on 4 feet, 11 x 11 cm, Ø 14,5 cm. Connector to the vase of stepped brass sheet.
Vase made of well-painted Satsuma pottery; 5 samurais on a yellow background, without the typical background painting. Originally not for kerosene/paraffin lamps; signed at the bottom.
The font is made of galvanised sheet iron, hidden in the vase, fixed to the base by a threaded rod. Font lid of stepped sheet brass, Ø 103 mm.

Burner:
14’’’ Kosmos burner of Schwintzer & Gräff, Berlin.
Wick knob marked: Prima Rundbrenner. Wick knob back: initials S&G.
Flat wick 65 mm.

Glass chimney:
14’’’ Kosmos chimney. Height 251 mm, Ø fitter 51 mm.
Marked: Spécial Recuit Made in France 14''' + crown in garland.

Shade and shade holder:
Ball shade by St. Louis (signed), colourless glass, frosted, deep-etched dragon motifs, 2 brass rings. Without slip fitter.
Height 177 mm, Ø bottom opening 62 and bulge 187 mm.
85 mm globe holder for 14’’’/15’’’ burners.

Lamp dimensions:
Height up to collar 25.5 cm, total height with chimney 54.6 cm.
Total weight 2080 g.
