L.099
A rather unusual zinc cast lamp for France with a very appealing Art Nouveau design, which in this form looks like a style icon of the French-Belgian Art Nouveau. For me as an Art Nouveau lover, this lamp is a special piece in my collection.
Three slender, elegantly shaped supports rise up to form an elongated column. These beams unite at the top to form a small, ornate chalice in which the glass font is cemented.
The hand-painted green glass font of the lamp was beautiful, but was accidentally destroyed. During a careless movement, the lamp fell sideways onto the work table and the font broke into several pieces! I had to buy a replacement font, which is also beautifully painted but has a different colour.
Patinating the zinc cast body using an older method was quite lengthy because there was quite a large surface to patinate. I had to proceed piece by piece in several stages. To do this, I first painted the metal with brass paint. After drying, I applied dark shoe polish and then rubbed it off with soft paper so that the raised areas reappeared in brass paint.
Despite months of patient searching, I couldn't find a matching shade with an appropriate Art Nouveau decoration. Finally, I bought a tulip shade in peachy pink that matched the size of the new font.
The result was a charming lamp, which of course would have been a real Art Nouveau showpiece if the tulip shade would have the perfectly matching decoration.
