L.105

A British ceramic lamp, surprising in form, by the English firm F. Winkle & Co. in Stoke-on-Trent (1890-1931). I bought this lamp because of its Messenger collar, as I had a vacant silver-plated Messenger burner and was looking for a suitable lamp for it. I got the lamp very cheaply because the paint was chipped on three leaves and the bayonet bars were missing from the font collar.

The ceramic vase bears the widespread pattern "Canton", which is applied to various ceramic products of this company (partly also in different colours). Since the manufactory changed its name to F. Winkle & Co. Ltd. in 1911, the lamp must have been made before 1911. The pattern is reminiscent of Chinese flower painting in Famille rose colours, and this probably initiated the name "Canton". All the black outlines are printed, the colours are hand-painted.

The lamp is unusual in its shape, as it completely dispenses with a separate base. The basic colour (a light purple) is also not very ordinary. This colour, along with the Messenger collar, was the second reason for my decision to buy the lamp, because it harmonises well with the silver-plated burner. I silver-plated the collar myself to match. I desoldered the bayonet bars from a destroyed Hinks collar and glued them on here.

A beautifully patterned ball shade in Art Nouveau style and a Duplex chimney have completed the lamp in a very stylish way.
