L.271
A British lamp with ceramic parts from the English ceramic manufacturer Taylor, Tunnicliffe & Co. in Staffordshire. This company is famous for the specific rough surface of their products. This ceramic surface is different from all other ceramic products. The company produced high quality utility ceramics from 1867 to 1898. My lamp is unfortunately not marked, but it certainly comes from this manufactory.
It took some effort to disassemble the lamp, because the screw nut at the bottom was rusted solid. I had to literally saw the nut out. When I took the vase out, I discovered that there were a total of 3 long hairline cracks (only one of which was immediately visible from the outside). However, Mr Kühnel did an excellent job of gluing all the cracks so that they are now hardly visible. As a result, the vase is now very well stabilised and sounds like a completely undamaged vase when you knock on it.
The vase features three very coherent and skilfully painted landscape motifs. One painting shows a fishing boat on a moving sea; a motif rarely found on kerosene/paraffin lamps. The area between the painted sections is filled with printed and hand-coloured flowers on a blue background.
The font had no font collar. I completed the lamp with a bayonet collar, a Hinks Duplex burner, an oval Duplex chimney and a British ball shade.
