L.141

A typical American glass lamp with the original painted glass parts and a large Duplex burner. Probably made around 1890. The burner is patented by J. Atwood, but the manufacturer of the lamp is unknown to me.

This lamp is a stroke of luck, because it is completely preserved except for the chimney, and has never been electrified! Moreover, the painting with its pastel, restrained colours is very pleasant. The original chimney was probably replaced at some point.

The round vase and the Rochester shade are painted with pleasantly restrained colours. This distinguishes this lamp from the GWTW lamps, which are painted in bright colours.

The burner is an old, large Duplex burner by Plume & Atwood. It was identified by the two patent dates on the wick knobs. The only matching patents with the exact dates were from Atwood. The patents are: Patent 163436 dated 18.05.1875 and Patent 187800 dated 27.02.1877. This Duplex burner uses 36 mm wicks. I had to replace the worn original wicks with new 33 mm wicks.

The former bronzing of the iron base was almost completely worn off, so I had no choice but to re-bronze the base with brass wax.
