L.058

A high quality French lamp made entirely of cast brass. Lamps like this one with a precisely and intricately cast brass body are relatively rare; most openwork brass lamps are made of brass sheet, but not of solid brass. Period of manufacture probably around 1880-1900. This date is based only on the high quality brass casting; later the quality has deteriorated.

The lamp body is composed of four pieces of cast brass. The base is screwed directly onto the threaded rod. On the wall of the vase are four blank, coat-of-arms-like medallions. One could probably have engraved one's initials on one of them.

I had to replace the supplied Matador burner with another burner, because the flame disc was not original (presumably from Hugo Schneider). I then used a high-quality 16’’’ Reform-Kosmos burner from Schuster & Baer.

Tulip or Vesta shades did not harmonise with the lamp; it called for a ball shade. I still had a light green ball shade from a new Polish production that I had bought for another lamp but had not used because the colour did not match as I hoped. And it was exactly this shade that fitted this lamp in every respect: the size was OK, the colour had no problem with the brass colour, and interestingly, the decoration of the shade totally matched the lamp!
