A typical French suspension lamp (i.e. lamp for use in the hanging lamps), which I actually only bought because of the burner. The eBay photo showed that it had a W&W Kosmos burner from 1865 mounted on it, with the wick knob inscription "Preismedaille 1867 Paris" (= Prize Medal 1867 Paris). These earliest Kosmos burners are very rare. However, the burner was not 14-lined, but 12-lined. I could not use it on an old W&W lamp as planned, and so it went to a highly esteemed collector friend.

The lamp, bought only because of the burner, was very decoratively ornamented with surrounding, elaborate decorations in high relief. After cleaning, one did have a piece of jewellery in one's hand. I decided to complete the lamp and add it to the collection.

I fitted the lamp with a very good 14’’’ Kosmos burner from K&T, to which the 235 mm shade holder was also soldered. This allowed me to use the extravagantly pressed white Vesta shade from the UK, which harmonises well with the sculptured floral pattern of the vase.

This resulted - unintentionally at first - in a smart French lamp that forms a harmonious unit with the well-matching Vesta shade.

Lamp body:
Entire lamp made of ornamentally pressed brass sheet. Base Ø 142 mm, at the very bottom Ø 131 mm.
The vase is mounted on a short column, with a surrounding decorative band with sculptured flowers, vase Ø 180 mm. I could not separate the pedestal from the vase (threaded rod spins).
Font made of sheet iron, hidden in the vase.

14’’’ Kosmos burner of Kästner & Töbelmann, Erfurt, soldered to the shade holder.
Wick knob marked: Logo of Kästner & Töbelmann.
Flat wick 67 mm.

Glass chimney:
14’’’ Kosmos chimney. Height 258 mm, Ø fitter 52 mm.
Marked: Cristal Recuit 14''' - Le Bayon Quincaillier Auray.

Shade and shade holder:
British Vesta shade, white milk glass colourless overlaid, pressed glass with leaf relief, fluted top rim.
Height 176 mm, Ø fitter 233 and bulge 264 mm.
235 mm shade holder for 14’’’/15’’’ burners, soldered to the burner.

Lamp dimensions:
Height up to collar 25.3 cm, total height with chimney 54.8 cm.
Total weight 2180 g.
