An unusual, finely painted night lamp from France. The painting is excellently preserved: a gallant rococo scene with a couple is depicted at the front, flowers are painted at the back and elsewhere. The shape of the lamp is not comparable with other lamps.

Only later, when I got the lamp, did I realise that the lamp is actually missing a wider base made of cast brass. This is because the porcelain base of the lamp is under-proportioned. The shorter sawn-off threaded rod also supports this assumption. The joy of this lamp was rather dampened by this finding.

Instead of a playful cast brass base, I would have to settle for a simpler turned brass plinth. For this, I sketched to scale and had a plain base turned from my sketch.

Both the tulip shade and the chimney are not commonplace. The tulip shade is made of slightly milky opaline glass, with a top rim that matches the colour well. The glass chimney is a rare Phénomène chimney with a peculiar shape.

My ingredients have created a small but charming lamp. In the past, it might have stood in a lady's bedroom.

New base of turned solid brass to complete the lamp, round, Ø 99 mm. The original base is missing.
Vase of Parisian porcelain with elaborate, fine painting. Vase stands on a smaller foot with raised golden ornamental decoration. Vase Ø 101 mm.
Sheet iron font, hidden inside the vase. Font lid of embossed sheet brass, Ø 83 mm.

Burner:
8’’’ Kosmos burner of Hugo Schneider, Leipzig.
Wick knob marked: HS (Logo of Hugo Schneider).
Flat wick 43 mm.

Glass chimney:
8’’’ Kosmos chimney. "Phénomène" chimney with an indentation above the pinch. Height 180 mm, Ø fitter 36 mm.
Marked: Qualité Suprême - J.D. 22 Rue de Douai - Importé Phénomène - Importe d'Autriche.

Shade and shade holder:
Tulip shade, opaline glass, pink above, rather milky below, horizontally finely ribbed, lipped fitter, fluted top rim (bright yellow shining under UV light).
Height 90 mm, Ø fitter 59 and top rim 160 mm.
58 mm globe holder for 8’’’/10’’’ burners.

Height up to collar 17.5 cm, total height with chimney 38.8 cm.
