L.074

A wonderfully playful, very finely painted, unusual lamp by the renowned Berlin lamp manufacturer Stobwasser, probably made around 1870-1880.

The shape of the lamp reminds me of oriental vases; a hint of 1001 Nights fairy tale scent wafts over... The unusual thing about this lamp, apart from the shape, is undoubtedly the fine, polychrome painting with lots of gold and the finely decorated and openwork cast parts (probably made of brass). The lamp is very elaborately made and certainly belonged to a rich household.

The glass of the vase is unfortunately broken in 3 places at the bottom; I have covered these places with a beautifully decorated brass band to match the style of the lamp.

I had managed to acquire a Prometheus burner of Stobwasser, which I was happy to mount on this lamp. Fortunately, I also found a bottle-shaped chimney that is very likely also from Stobwasser, because the oil lamp logo shown is identical to the same logo on my other Stobwasser chimneys.

This lamp originally had a tulip shade made of the same glass and with the same painting of the lamp. A completely preserved example of this lamp can be admired in the collection of a collector friend. Unfortunately, the original tulip shade was missing from my lamp. I used instead an old, satin-finished tulip shade, deep-etched with ornamental floral motifs. Although it is not signed, it certainly comes from a renowned glass manufacturer (e.g. St. Louis or S. Reich). It complements this lamp very well.
