L.231
A finely painted lamp made of alabaster glass in the shape of a goblet from the Classicism period! Date of origin probably around 1870-1880.
The lamp has an elegant, conical goblet shape of mould-blown glass, is correspondingly high and has no break-off hole at the bottom. It is a fine, well-proportioned glassblower's work without any damage. If you look at the painting with the flower garlands and other ornaments, some with very fine lines, it is easy to see that this lamp was made for the upper middle classes.
A nice surprise is the included burner, which has an 8-rayed star as logo, but is clearly a product of Wild & Wessel. The following attributes speak for this: a) The hole pattern of the basket can also be found on other W&W burners; b) the wall of the deflector has a double row of holes (usual for W&W); c) the globe holder with the long recesses is also typical for W&W; d) the globe holder is firmly soldered to the burner, which is often the case with early Kosmos burners by W&W.
Interesting is the fact that the letters B., H., R. and W. can be found on the back of the wick knob (order not clear, probably a dealer?).
Really old German ball or tulip shades from the time of the lamp are extremely rare. The period-matching Moderator ball shades from France have only a small bottom opening, so that they can hardly get over the burner gallery. One must therefore look for substitutes.
Unfortunately, a size-matched German tulip shade with a typical bulbous subdivision has a 70 mm fitter width. As I did not want to remove the original W&W globe holder with 85 mm fitter width, I sawed off an additional 70 mm globe holder accordingly and inserted it into the existing globe holder.
