L.080

A typical "Gone with the wind" lamp by the American glass manufacturer Consolidated Lamp & Glass Co. Production ca. 1895-1900. The lamp was complete except for the glass chimney. Unfortunately, the owner himself had broken and disposed of the matching shade, so a new shade was due. 3.5 years later I found a light beige, partially painted 25 cm shade as a replacement shade on eBay Germany that reasonably fits the lamp.

According to the seller, his grandparents received this lamp as a gift for their wedding around 1900. Both grandparents were of German descent, so the owner was pleased that their lamp is now coming to Germany. He also remembers that there used to be a glass bead hanging on the shade (now probably discarded). The holes on the shade holder are existing. I have attached a matching, colourless glass bead hanging.

The construction of the lamp is very typical of the "Gone with the wind" lamps of the time: the ornamental, openwork cast iron base is heavily brass-plated. The mighty, urn-shaped vase is attached to the base with a connector. Inside the vase is an additional container, which is connected to the base with a threaded rod. The drop-in font has the usual 5-inch size (diameter of the lower, cylindrical part of the font).

The painted flowers on the vase consist of printed outlines and hand painted/coloured areas.

The burner by Plume & Atwood has some fine brass cracks which are not distracting. What is worse is that it cannot be unscrewed from the font lid (probably partially corroded inside). The flame disc was also firmly attached. When I tried to take the flame disc off, it broke at the sieve tube! However, I was able to buy the same flame disc again at auction (see Courter: Center-draft Kerosene Lamps, page 155, dated 1895).
