A truly extraordinary, large lamp that had not yet appeared on eBay Germany in this form and with this equipment. Accordingly, the interest in this lamp was quite high, and in the end I had to buy it at quite a high price by German eBay standards!

The mighty vase is made of extremely intricately painted majolica, with many flowers and plants rendered quite naturalistically and worked in relief. There are a few areas of chipped glaze, but these can only be seen from close up. The basic tone is greenish; from light yellow-green in the upper part, the colour changes to fresher light green in the lower part. On this background, many butterflies are painted with a gossamer brush. The font lid matches the vase exactly, only the colour is a little darker here due to kerosene/paraffin influence.

The lamp has a British burner and the matching bayonet collar, but I have a feeling that it originated in Germany, as the cast zinc parts (base and top ring of the vase) are rather German. It is possible that the lamp was produced in Germany but for the British market. I have ultimately defined it as a British lamp.

Zinc castings cleaned, painted with brass paint and patinated with black shoe polish.

Lamp body:
Base of ornamental zinc casting, on 4 feet, 16 x 16 cm, bronzed with brass paint.
Vase of elaborately painted majolica, in slightly concave cylindrical form, with sculptured plants in natural reproduction and many gossamer painted butterflies, Ø 142 mm. The ring at the top of the vase is also made of cast zinc. In the vase an additional container made of sheet brass.
Drop-in font of sheet brass (painted green). Lid also of majolica, painted to match the vase, Ø 146 mm.

Burner:
Duplex burner of Palmer & Co., Birmingham, bayonet fitting, with extinguisher. Firmly combined with the globe holder.
Two wick knobs marked: Improved Duplex Z. Black glass inlays.
One flat wick as a loop, 28 mm. Transport wick not provided.

Glass chimney:
Duplex chimney with oval bulge. Height 249 mm, Ø fitter 64 mm.
Marked: Fire Proof - Heat Resisting - Foreign + anchor.

Shade and shade holder:
Ball shade, colourless glass, frosted, flat-transparent lace ornamentation, flat upper rim.
Height 188 mm, Ø fitter 92 and bulge 197 mm.
100 mm globe holder for 20’’’ burners; integral part of the burner.

Lamp dimensions:
Height up to collar 33.1 cm, total height with chimney 62.6 cm.
Total weight 3600 g.
