L.113

A British glass lamp in the style of the French Moderator lamps in baluster form; but is a regular kerosene/paraffin lamp. The fine painting on the glass parts as well as the ornamental base made of cast brass suggest that it rather belongs to the Historicism. I date the lamp around 1875-1885.

Both the elongated vase and the font are made of the same light green opal glass and are discreetly painted with fine flowers and ornamental lines. Since the bayonet collar is by Hinks & Son, one gets the suspicion whether perhaps the whole lamp is by this maker. However, there are no indications of this under the base: the iron weight is not marked.

I got the lamp very cheaply because the two bayonet bars on the font collar had been removed. I built these missing parts myself from a thick sheet of brass and glued them in place with Stabilit. I fitted the lamp in style with a Hinks burner.

The old ball shade from the UK, which however came much more expensive than the entire rest of the lamp, is finely etched with floral motifs, and therefore fits well on the lamp, which also has small flowers as a decorative band.
