L.180

A small, delicate French Cloisonné lamp, the two-piece vase of which was obviously produced for kerosene/paraffin lamps. Production probably around 1900.

Lamps with genuine Cloisonné vases are quite rare to find. Most of the "Cloisonné" lamps offered so far were in themselves Champlevé lamps. Either people are unable to distinguish between Cloisonné and Champlevé technique, or they use the much better known term "Cloisonné" to make the goods offered more attractive to customers. See the subchapter Enamel, Cloisonné, Champlevé at the Info Boxes.

This lamp here captivates by its unusual ornamentation: Two medallions each have darker or grey backgrounds. The darker ones have metallic glittering copper-coloured inclusions. The red fields have been executed with transparent enamel paint. The large field outside the ornamentation is in a hitherto very rare ochre colour. The lamp gains a simple elegance through the restraint of the polychrome ornamentation.

The lamp was electrified when I bought it. I soldered a brass plate to the hole in the sheet metal font for the cable. A beautifully painted, small Art Nouveau tulip shade complemented the lamp well.
